Value is not determined by fiscal price. Value is determined by the power an object or action can give you. The most powerful acts in my life are prayer and exercise. The most powerful objects in my life are the ones my eye returns to daily, objects that mean something, that tell me a story of passion, endurance or patience. Most treasured among my ridiculously large hoard of possessions are wee things I’ve pulled from a gutter or purchased in a tiny stall in some remote country. Like this Egyptian couple. Egyptians are hearty, loquacious people, and while we traveled there we were accosted by gestures of interest and ebullience. I love this little couple because whenever I see them I recall Egyptians and sitting on the Nile in the morning feasting on tomatoes and soft white cheese for breakfast.
