Case Bound 466 Page Handmade Essentials of Geography Embellished Junk Journal with Handtorn Paper in Antique Canvas Book Cover with Brass Edges
The idea with this was to see how much beauty I could pack into a massive, embellished journal. There is so much original art in this book it would be hard to list it all. I pulled out all the stops with this, using every trick I know. I sewed and embellished and crammed this thing as if it were my own treasure hoard. It was wonderful to do. The book itself is a family heirloom, a schoolbook from my husband’s family. There is an original page from the book, a map pictured here in the gallery. This is a joy, and I want it to belong to someone who will use it to create lots of joy in their own life.
To photograph it effectively I catalogued every page is it was made, before I sewed it in. The strap is 100% genuine leather.
I LOVE handmade stuff, real folkart that’s actually, truly, from scratch. I collect stuff that’s human and full of the heart of whomever made it. All my journals are this way – I mean to make treasures. I’m not making a product, I’m building something beautiful because it’s worth doing.
In every case there is only 1 of these; you are buying the only one there will ever be. This book has a kind of cool, old smell. It belonged to a set – I bought them all, carted them all halfway across the globe. I want some person to use it and use it and use it!

SIZE: This journal measures about 7 3/4 inches wide (about 19.5cm) by 10 1/4 inches tall (about 26cm) and is about 6 inches thick (about 15cm)

BINDING: This is a case bound book. I sew with doubled cotton crochet thread.
PAPERS: I collect all kinds of papers, some are handmade cotton, many are from commercial bags from my travels or from home, and then there are just cool papers I may have to repair or even paste together to use. I never stop collecting paper – every recycling bin means I’m rummaging. The innermost page of most signatures is a very thin page normally. I employ actual used paper, with rips, spots, stains, glues; I even glue pages together, overlay them if they’re not big enough, and repair pages with little patches if I really love the patina. I handcut or rip each page to size, I clean up any obvious dirt but leave all stains. I iron the paper with a steam iron.
EDGES: This book has brass edges added to the top and bottom of the leather cover in front and back. These have been hammered on by hand – they’re there to keep the edges crisp.
