Case Bound 184 Page Handmade Theras Truly Madly Deeply Junk Journal with Handtorn Paper in Antique Canvas Book Cover with Brass Edges
I bought this antique book in South Africa in a little village antique shop. I stenciled a gold butterfly across the front and onto the spine. Then I stamped the words Truly Madly and Deeply on the canvas cover. The book has wee brass edges. There is a red rose stenciled on the back as well as a replicated movie ticket.
On the inside are many stickers on the inner front and back cover and a second die cut butterfly. I also put this sweet, tea-dyed calico edging on the inner front and back pages.
The inner pages are very thin, handmade beige cotton paper, all hand ripped and hand sewn. The pages are all identical.
THESE PAGES ARE VERY SOFT, THEY CANNOT ABSORB PEN OR MARKERS WITHOUT BLEED THROUGH, SO THIS JOURNAL IS ONLY FOR SCRAPBOOKING OR JUNK JOURNALING.
There are many pieces of ephemera: there’s a page from the original book with a black cat overlaid, a replicated black and white photograph, and an original, genuine cigarette card of “Famous and Beautiful Women” the Duchess of Richmond and Lennox. I have photographed this card front and back. I bought it in South Africa at the same store. I also included a replicated ruler and a Victorian changeling toy Rat. I sell the digital kit to make these toys on this site. I absolutely LOVE these little paper toys.
I LOVE handmade stuff, real folkart that’s actually, truly, from scratch. I collect stuff that’s human and full of the heart of whomever made it. All my journals are this way – I mean to make treasures. I’m not making a product, I’m building something beautiful because it’s worth doing.

BINDING: This is a case bound book. I sew with doubled cotton crochet thread.
PAPERS: I collect all kinds of papers, some are handmade cotton, many are from commercial bags from my travels or from home, and then there are just cool papers I may have to repair or even paste together to use. I never stop collecting paper – every recycling bin means I’m rummaging. The innermost page of most signatures is a very thin page normally. I employ actual used paper, with rips, spots, stains, glues; I even glue pages together, overlay them if they’re not big enough, and repair pages with little patches if I really love the patina. I handcut or rip each page to size, I clean up any obvious dirt but leave all stains. I iron the paper with a steam iron.
EDGES: This book has brass edges added to the top and bottom of the leather cover in front and back. These have been hammered on by hand – they’re there to keep the edges crisp.
