These are handmade by women in Nepal. They stuff the rings with straw and plastic bags and then sew on the designs so they can use them to balance the cargo they carry on their heads. I bought all these in a really, really dirty, tiny little shop run by a very old man in Kathmandu and I absolutely love everything about them. I have cautiously handwashed all of them to bring out their color, as each one was well worn on a Nepali woman’s head before it came to me. These sweet rings are exquisite examples of human beings embellishing their daily lives for the pure joy of it. They make my heart sing every day as they hand above the stove in our tiny kitchen here in Dar.
