Case Bound 616 Page Handmade Footsteps Denim Soft Cover Junk Journal with Handtorn Paper and Brass Edges

This is a soft cover (like a paperback), case bound pocket sized journal.  It has a handdone stencil on the front and a fabric butterfly on back with brass edges.  The cord inside is 100% real silk.  I did the inside of this soft cover journal with Chinese paint paper that I then coated with a light, water-based varnish.  The inner pages are thin and very soft, all identical beige handmade cotton paper torn to size.

THESE HANDMADE PAPER PAGES ARE TOO SOFT TO ACCOMMODATE MARKERS – THE COLOR WILL BLEED THROUGH.  Only use this journal for pencil or scrapbooking.

There are 2 ephemera:  One is an old American flag I overlaid on a restaurant order pad, the second is a section from and antique South African book with a dancing couple overlaid.

I LOVE handmade stuff, real folkart that’s actually, truly, from scratch.  I collect stuff that’s human and full of the heart of whomever made it.  All my journals are this way – I mean to make treasures. I’m not making a product, I’m building something beautiful because it’s worth doing.

In every case there is only 1 of these; you are buying the only one there will ever be.  This book has a kind of cool, old smell.  It belonged to a set – I bought them all, carted them all halfway across the globe.  I want some person to use it and use it and use it!

SIZE: This journal measures about 3 1/2 inches wide (about 9.5cm) by 7 1/2 inches tall (about 21cm) and is about 2 inches thick (about 5cm)

BINDING: This is a case bound book.  I sew with doubled cotton crochet thread.

PAPERS: I collect all kinds of papers, some are handmade cotton, many are from commercial bags from my travels or from home, and then there are just cool papers I may have to repair or even paste together to use.  I never stop collecting paper – every recycling bin means I’m rummaging.  The innermost page of most signatures is a very thin page normally.  I employ actual used paper, with rips, spots, stains, glues; I even glue pages together, overlay them if they’re not big enough, and repair pages with little patches if I really love the patina.  I handcut or rip each page to size, I clean up any obvious dirt but leave all stains.  I iron the paper with a steam iron.

EDGES:  This book has brass edges added to the top and bottom of the leather cover in front and back.  These have been hammered on by hand – they’re there to keep the edges crisp.
