There is a little beachfront bar on a remote beach on Koh Tao. The guy who owns it walks around in a Ghandhi diaper most of the time. He made his bar entirely out of stuff that washed up out of the ocean. There are several beached wooden boats he uses for bunks, and a fishtank he’s made out of an old microwave oven. I was enchanted by his place, and I loved his puppets – they are made from old buoys. So when we got back to China I made these from our Thai ocean treasures. The man is named Senior Jose because I love a character by that name in a Jose Saramago novel. His wife is Consuela. They live on our porch now.
