I always buy fabric for my own quilting everywhere we travel. In Bhaktapur, one day, in the pouring rain, we crowded into one of the fabric shops and I tiny pieces of dozens of fabrics. Nepali women are beautifully dressed in long layers, each bit of fabric different from the rest. There is so much fashion in the world; I read Vogue every day online, and when we travel I admire the women and how they invent their own costumes. The costumes in Nepal were exceptional. We spend hours digging through an enormous upper room of a local shopkeeper who had thousands and thousands of used print blocks. It was a very old building, with the beuatiful wooden walls, windows, and floors. We kept stacking up our choices and then I’d find more. Ultimately I painted the pattern on the front so I could see it better.
