Whole World is Saying Gilbey’s Gin International Gin Matchbook Sticker (MB479)

In the mid 1800’s Henry Gilbey, the fortunate son of a strong woman who lost her husband right after she had given birth to 6 children, returned to England having served in the Crimean War and opened a wine and spirits shop in Oxford Street, London.  The tariffs on spirits, most all of which were imported, was exceptionally high, pricing out most everyone but the upper and very wealthy middle classes.  Gilbey decided to import alcohols from within the British empire, providing inexpensive spirits for the everyday person.  He also broke established tradition by allowed wine to be purchased by the bottle, instead of by the 12 piece case.  He was driven to accommodate the desires of working people who had otherwise no access to the pleasures of alcohol.  Gilbey eventually expanded and started importing from places with low tariff rates and gave his customers access to a broad international range of products.  I’m sure that his awareness of the actual size of the world, and his confidence that he could cross international boundaries informed the design of this early matchcover.  It’s a fantastic example of risk taking and such a lovely testimony to his passion.  He decided to make his own gin, ultimately, and ran numerous other businesses in his lifetime. I bet his momma was proud.
