Waldorf Astoria Hotel New York Matchbook Sticker (MB351)

So a rich guy gets mad at his auntie and to punish her he builds a ginormous hotel right next door to her mansion.  That’s pretty imaginative revenge.  He made her royally mad.  The palatial hotel was in the wrong part of town, and was snubbed by all in the social hierarchy as something far too costly to actually use for business and in the wrong location to boot.  It boasted a telephone in every room, a HUGE luxury at the time and was terribly costly to build.  So what does the clever William Astoria do to market his doomed palace?  He opens his hotel as a benefit to the darling charity of the very wealthy – Saint Mary’s Hospital for Children.  Of course that was a whopping success, raising the astonishing sum of 4.5 million US dollars in 1893.  Soon the Waldorf Hotel was built beside the Astor, and between the two hotels they created a walkway known as Peacock Alley so that the rich folk could walk from one to the other without getting mussed.

Kind of cool, other than this nifty feud founding story is that the maitre-d’hotel Oscar Tschirky was a celebrity host, and published a 900 page cookbook resulting from his more than 50 years at the hotel revealing dishes that were special to that place – including eggs Benedict, Thousand island dressing, and Waldorf salad.  AND!  This hotel was the first to ever welcome unescorted women into its rooms.  Kudos all around for this place.  I just LOVE a good hotel.
