Waikiki Biltmore Hotel Honolulu Hawaii Matchbook Sticker (MB505)
Joseph Greenbach’s dream was to build this hotel, which he did, in 1953, for 3 million US dollars. The history of the hotel, though, is more interesting from the viewpoint of Eddie Park, who, at 19, joined the staff at the opening as a bellboy. The Biltmore was the biggest highrise on Honolulu and terribly glamorous. On opening night one swanky couple standing beside the hotel pool were pushed into the water by a prankster who is still at large. He said, too, that one dud completely misunderstood the modern plate glass windows in the brand new hotel and clocked himself damn good by walking right into the wall at full speed. The former bellboy said that the electricity often went out in those early days, so he’d be huffing and puffing up flight after flight carrying luggage for guests.
