United States Science Pavilion 1962 Seattle World’s Fair Matchbook Sticker (MB383)
The wonderful story connected to this building really makes my heart sing. The US government, in interviewing architects proposing to design a science pavilion were warned that after the World’s Fair the building would be concerted to a government warehouse and was to be designed with the longer, secondary purpose in mind. Sooooo, then, it came time to choose the architect, and one, Minoru Yamasaki, said, essentially, screw that. He insisted that if he were selected his building would reflect the glory of science with no regard at all to a secondary purpose, flabbergasting the people making the decisions. Of course they did choose his design for the building, and now it remains one of the most beautiful and important architectural structures on the US West coast.
