An Armenian family of shoemakers immigrates to Fresno in the late 1800’s.  Paul Paul, one of the four siblings in the family, was a Renaissance man. Though he eventually owned a massive farm operation, he also served as the leader of the Fresno Municipal Band, dabbled as a wrestler, and tried his hand selling insurance.  One of Paul Paul’s sons grew up and played football for UCLA and then for the Los Angeles Rams.  Once that boy retired from playing football, he moved right into coaching.  I love this family.  I cannot imagine what it must have been life to sit down to supper with all those rowdy children in the middle of the California farm country.  They must have had a hell of a momma presiding.  I’m sure that this brand name comes from the passion and pride a father feels watching a son do something important and beautiful.  Surely this is exactly how Paul Paul recalls his wee son, sporting a grin, holding the caught touchdown ball, having ruined, for the umpteenth time, his clothing.  I LOVE stories like these, where you can see the beautiful history behind small companies, where you can divine the kind of passion required to build something important.  This is a glorious American story – a family coming to the US, transforming themselves, transforming the place where they decide to plant themselves, and then. all of that perfect serendipity making into something wonderful.
