In 1921 an article entitled “Citrus Possibilities of Southwest Texas” prophesied correctly that since Texas was far easier to ship from than was Florida or California, Texas was destined to become a huge producer of the popular orange.  The real boom came during the Second World War when US soldiers said, Ew, to crystals that were meant to give them vitamin C.  Suddenly the entire industry was invested in producing frozen or canned juice that would be tasty.  When I was a kid you had to leave the cannister of orange juice on the counter for a few hours and then squeeze the pulpy mass carefully so the tube of it did not spill over the edge of the jar you used, but actually went in.  Then you’d mix it with some tap water.  I really, really loved orange juice as a kid, and I loved it frozen too, in mini pops.  This label actually reminds me of my friends Dusty and Susan.  I’m pretty sure Dusty, who is a lawyer, but one of the good ones, is going to be a judge one day.  Every time I see this label I think of Dusty who has, more than once, been the cause of my drinking one too many margaritas whilst I’m visiting the great state of Texas where tequila runs wild.
