Sunflower Hotel, Abilene, Kansas
We have a very dear friend from Kansas who has told us wonderful stories about the vast plains there. I have always loved sunflowers, but I learned to love them more when I was in Doha, Qatar. It is entirely desert there, so the whole city is beige. But at the construction site near where I drove my son to school, beside the worker shed, someone planted a few sunflowers in a pot and kept them watered and they were absolutely enormous. In the Middle East, the great glory is the sun. The quality of light there is absolutely pure, a stunning magnificence I’ve never seen anyplace else in the world. So it stands to reason that a pampered sunflower would be in heaven there.
