Primo Pilsener Lager Beer Sunnyside Cafe Hawaii Brewing Corporation Honolulu Hawaii Matchbook Sticker (MB367)
We are part of a very large Chamorro family. The Chamorro people live on the Marianas Islands, which are a group of US territories in the Pacific. We lived on Rota, with our Chamorro family for 6 years. The word Primo, on the islands, means a lot. If you are a guy, and super close with a friend, man to man, you say Primo when you talk to one another, or just Prim (pronounced Preem). We arrived on the island after having been married for 11 years without being able to have children. The first night we were there we wound up playing poker at my husband’s boss’s house until 4 in the morning. We never really left that dear old outdoor kitchen the whole time we lived on Rota. That man, my husband’s old boss, is the godfather to our son, and his wife, Frances, is one of my very favorite people on the planet. She’s a perfect woman – beautiful, smart, strong, independent, loyal as hell and not someone you want to fuck with. Ever. Her daughter and son, my Isla and Latte, are our godchildren.
So – Fran’s mother is a Chamorro medicine woman, (Auntie Tita). But I started on that first day just calling her Mom, like everyone at the poker table. Months and months later Mom said to me, on the night they threw a surprise birthday party for me in that outdoor kitchen, “I can make you pregnant.” Well, 2 weeks later, I was the first white girl to be made pregnant using native Chamorro medicine. I had my baby when I was 41! So, for me, Primo means a LOT, as my son has 17 sets of godparents on Rota, and we speak to our Rota family every single day no matter where we are on the planet. I LOVE island culture, and this beer name epitomizes all that is truly sacred about island life. (A wee side note to this story – when I brought my baby back to Rota after having given birth to him on the bigger neighboring island of Guam, I handed him to Mom’s husband, Papa Tony. Papa Tony took one look at my baby and said, “But Aimee, that’s a white baby!” Papa Tony was truly disappointed with the green eyes and blonde fluff on Singko’s head.) Rota will always be where my heart lives, and when we are home there I have to sit next to Mom all the time. She is the holiest person I have ever met in my entire life.
