Mark Hopkins Top O the Mark San Francisco Atop Nob Hill Matchbook Sticker (MB84)

This place was built after the mansion that occupied the highest point in the city of San Francisco was destroyed in the 1906 quake.  Once it was complete this super rich dude rented out the entire top floor of the building as his own private residence.  Once that guy was gone they spend 110,000USD in 1933 to convert it into a bar.  The the 1940’s the Top O the Mark was the place where Marjorie Trumbull interviewed celebrities for KSFO.  One of the very coolest things about this bar is its “squadron” bottles.  You’d have a special bottle of liquor that was the personal and exclusive property of your squadron during the Korean War.  If you took a drink from the Squad bottle, it was free, and you signed your name on the label and put the date  –  until the last drink in the bottle, in which case you had to purchase the next bottle for your squadron.  There were 32 Squadron Bottles by the end of that miserable war.  I really would LOVE to see a label from a Squadron Bottle.

My father drank his Chivas and I had a martini at this penthouse car – Top of the Mark. We arrived there after the scariest fucking cab ride of my life – the driver actually fishtailed into the port cache when we pulled up after careening down the wrong side of the road in a tunnel.  San Francisco is a wondrous city. This is a fine old place saturated with elegance.
