Maguire and Patterson Special Safety Match Dublin Rub Lightly Matchbook Magnet (MM83)

It’s so cool that this is an Irish Matchbox, but I truly enjoy the phrase “rub lightly” – it’s hilarious!  The man who owned this company is a complex hero – Maguire campaigned exhaustively in the 1900’s in Liverpool to make sure that the workers and people of his world were protected from poison.  The White Phosphorus Prohibition Act passed in 1908 for which he received special national commendation.  Maguire owned and raced horses, and his horse Workman won the Grand National.  But running alongside of this public life he enduring catastrophic addiction to alcohol which ultimately killed him.  Maguire is certainly a workingman’s hero.  It’s a beautiful box and I’m deeply connected to Ireland through my father, Dennis O’Malley, who also suffered and died from alcoholism.  I’ve never traveled to Ireland, though my husband has.  I’ve always been keen to go but when we plan travel it never seems to be quite the right time.  I keep thinking I want to see just how green it is – Nora Roberts’ novels, and the testimony of my husband tell me that Ireland is truly God’s country and dazzlingly green.

The surface is textured, so it does not scratch. We developed it over a period of several years with our production partner in China. It took us a long, long time to get to this PVC product. Our intention, as we developed this product, was to make it as durable as our handmade magnet products were when we first began selling them more than 14 years ago.
