Howard Johnsons Famous Ice Cream Matchbook Sticker (MB69)
This is one of our top 5 covers. The eager boy, the puppy who is dripping ice cream from its muzzle, and the amazing profile on this cover probably combine to make it so. I grew up staying in Howard Johnson’s hotels in Florida as a child. They had yummy breakfasts. When Howard Johnson the businessman wanna-be began his illustrious career he purchased a drug store and noticed that the majority of his profit emanated from the soda counter. Then further, he determined that the way to increase this revenue stream was by serving the best ice cream. Following that line of thought he added a bunch of butterfat to his secret ice cream recipe and viola – everyone is in love with the creamy goodness of Howard Johnson’s. Later in his career he had this huge stroke of good luck when a play that was running in a prominent theater in Boston got banned for its content, and of course this gave the Eugene O’Neil production loads of PR as it relocated to much less fancy digs, digs that happened to be right near the one and only Howard Johnson’s. Didn’t take long for the place to be a cool celeb hangout before and after performances.
