This hotel was a huge favourite of people who took advantage of steamship travel from Chicago across the lake and away from the city.  Because it sits on the very top of a hill, the hotel had magnificent views, but was troublesome to reach from the port below.  So in 1905 you paid 1 US penny and you stepped onto the “moving staircase” and rode up with your luggage.  Native peoples spoke of “foul smelling” gasses in the area, and it was discovered that sulfur springs ran unground there, and the hotel became far more popular because of its mineral baths.  The place still exists, though it has been rebuilt, essentially, and is residential now, rather than commercial.
