Goodhue Hotel Port Arthur Texas 200 Rooms Matchbook Sticker (MB54)
This is a joyous scene – the man waving, the gull careening, the enormous resort looming. The quaint idea of air conditioning as a special treat and rooms with baths make this cover very compelling too. In 1929 there was a breathless newspaper announcement on August 22nd that the Goodhue Hotel would “throw open its doors”. It was a brave little hotel, and managed to survive a huge hurricane, Audrey, in the 50’s. Then, adding to its history, Janis Joplin chose to give a press conference there when she revisited her Texas roots! If you ate there you’d have spent .40cents which would not have been wasted, as “the chef at Goodhue was trained in the Baker Hotel kitchen at Dallas Texas for nine months before he was appointed chef at the Goodhue, that’s why you enjoy his cooking.” How precious is that!? Dallas is apparently where one must go to be a truly excellent chef!
