1942 Kansas State Fair Hutchinson Kansas Matchbook Sticker (MB390)

This particular year the Kansas Fair had to respond to the US just entering World War 2.  on the Tuesday on this fair adults were asked to bring 50 POUNDS (22.6 kilo) of scrap metal if they wanted to get in and even children were required to bring 25 POUNDS (11.33 kilo)).  The Kansas people took that seriously.  Mr. and Mrs. Wiley from Nickerson, Kansas brought 340 pounds (154.2kilo) of iron in their truck.  And a World War 1 veteran from Greensburg Kansas carried in 800 pounds ( 362.8 kilo) of scrap on a trailer to donate to the war effort – he said since he’d had German scrap metal, he’d like to donate some back.  By the end of the day the fair collected 32 tons (nearly 30,000 kilo) of scrap metal, all of which was essentially hand delivered by the people of Kansas.  During this fair there was a contest to see who could make the best recipe from rationed food.  Mrs. Detter of Hutchinson won the contest for her honey applesauce cake.  I love absolutely everything about this matchcover  so much goodwill and courage went on.  I hope the person who originally carried this matchcover donated lots of scrap metal that day.
